Storm Gap answers one question for anyone heading to Tahoe: when can you get over Donner Summit? It combines live radar, an hourly precipitation forecast along I-80 from Auburn to Floriston, summit cameras and current chain controls into a single road call for the next 48 hours.
What does it show?
- A road call for the summit stretch, hour by hour: wet, chains possible, chains likely or closure risk.
- Where rain turns to snow, against the road’s elevation.
- Live radar now, and the HRRR forecast ahead.
- Live Caltrans summit cameras and the chain controls in effect.
How reliable is it?
Timing confidence comes from a backtest on four winters, 2022 to 2026, about 150 storm days, scored against radar-measured precipitation. The chain-control thresholds are estimates until this winter’s Caltrans log lets them be scored too. Storm Gap forecasts weather and likely road impact, not official road status; Caltrans and CHP set the chain controls.
