They’re investors in many of our clients companies and when they needed a custom web application developed to track and display their investment portfolio next to the NASDAQ, S&P 500 and Dow Jones, they reached out to see if we could help. Discovery
We haven’t built any stock tracking applications or tools before so we had to research available API’s that would allow us to build our own portfolio of stocks, track and update the stocks daily and then develop a system to display these stocks on a website. To complicate things a bit more, not all of these stocks trade on US exchanges so we needed to be able to pull data from several global exchanges. After prototyping a solution we determined the design plan and went ahead designing the user interface.
Design
The page design itself is pretty simple. This was desired in order to highlight what’s important on the page; The stock chart and table. Working with GGV Capitals existing brand guidelines, we designed the chart to be interactive and a table that was not harsh on the eyes.
Development
First step was to design a database to store all of the stock data. Then we connected the various API’s to update our database at a set frequency. Once we had all the correct data stored and updating in our database, we built the front end in WordPress to display our data and manage the page content. We minimized and optimized the WordPress Administration to allow for a fast-loading website with tools to specifically manage the application.
