AEO vs SEO

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

Key takeaways

  • SEO wins the click in a results list; AEO wins the mention in a written answer.
  • The disciplines overlap heavily, and SEO fundamentals are the foundation AEO stands on.
  • What is new in AEO: retrieval-crawler access, passage-level writing, owning specific questions, and measurement that accounts for assistant-to-assistant variance.
  • A site can rank well and still be absent from AI answers. The two need checking separately.

SEO optimizes your site to rank in a list of search results and earn the click. AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, optimizes your site to be read, quoted, and recommended inside an AI assistant's answer, where there may be no list and no click at all. The overlap between them is large, and that is the most practical thing to know: most of what good SEO already does is the foundation AEO stands on. The differences are real, but they sit in specific places, and this page names them.

If you want the full picture of how assistants choose sources, start with our companion page, What is AEO. This page is about the boundary between the two disciplines.

Do I still need SEO if I am doing AEO?

Yes, and not as a legacy obligation. Standard SEO best practices still win, twice over. First, search rankings still drive real traffic and real revenue, and nothing in AEO changes that. Second, AI assistants lean on the same signals classic SEO built: crawlable sites, clear titles, structured data, pages that answer the query, and third-party pages that mention you. A site that ranks well is usually a site assistants can read well. In our own testing, the assistants frequently cited exactly the kind of third-party roundups and comparison pages that SEO has always tried to earn placement in.

The honest framing is not SEO versus AEO. It is that AEO extends SEO to a second audience: machines that read on a buyer's behalf and answer in prose.

What transfers directly from SEO?

Most of the fundamentals. Crawlability and site health. Structured data and schema. Clear information architecture. Pages organized around questions buyers actually ask. Earned mentions on third-party sites, which matter to assistants for the same reason links mattered to search engines. If your SEO house is in order, a large share of AEO is already done, which is also why we tell clients not to treat AEO as a separate budget line bolted onto a separate vendor.

What is new in AEO?

Four things earn their own attention.

Retrieval crawler access. Search taught everyone to welcome Googlebot. AI retrieval crawlers are newer, and templates, firewalls, and CDN defaults block them constantly, without anyone deciding to. A site can rank on page one and be invisible to live AI answers at the same time. Checking the retrieval crawlers by name is an AEO task with no SEO equivalent, and it is the most common fix we make.

Passage-level writing. Search rewards a relevant page. Assistants quote a liftable passage: an opening that answers the question in the first sentences, a heading phrased as the question, a fact concrete enough to repeat. The editorial unit shrinks from the page to the paragraph.

Question ownership. Our research found the clearest wins where a firm owned the definitive page for one specific buyer question, with the question restated in the URL. That is content strategy, not tagging, and it is the AEO move with the strongest evidence behind it. The two studies are here.

Measurement discipline. Rankings are comparatively stable. Assistant answers are not: in our testing, two major assistants agreed on roughly a quarter of the companies they named for identical questions, and single assistants changed their answers between sessions. AEO measurement means repeated checks, multiple assistants, and honest error bars, which is why we distrust any tool, including a hypothetical version of our own, that reports AI visibility as one stable number.

Where should a small business start?

In this order. Confirm the retrieval crawlers can reach your site; our AI Visibility plugin verifies all of them by name. Keep doing real SEO. Bring your key pages up to the structural floor: answer-first openings, question-form headings, FAQ markup. Then pick the one question you most want to be the answer to, and publish the page that owns it. That sequence reflects what the evidence supports, strongest claims first.

FAQs

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AI assistants draw on the same underlying web that search engines index, and on many of the same signals. AEO extends SEO to a second reader, the assistant, rather than replacing the first.

Should I hire a separate AEO agency?

Usually not. Most AEO work is an extension of content and technical work an SEO-literate team already does. The new tasks, retrieval-crawler checks and passage-level editing, are additions to that work, not a parallel program.

Can a site rank well in Google but be invisible to AI assistants?

Yes, and it is common. Retrieval crawlers such as ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User are often blocked by firewall or template defaults that leave Googlebot untouched. The page ranks; the assistant cannot fetch it.

Do AI assistants use the same results as Google?

Partly. Assistants cite a mix: your own pages, third-party rankings and roundups, and their own training memory. Which mix you get depends on the question asked, which is why specific questions favor your own content and superlative questions favor third-party lists.

How do I know if AI assistants are reading my site?

Server logs show it if you know the crawler names. Our AI Visibility plugin logs all of them, separates training crawlers from live-answer retrievals, and shows which pages assistants fetch most.
